Stay High With Cookies & Cream

I was restocking our shelves on this, yet another sultry morning in a summer of sultry mornings, when I came across this, our Cookies and Cream chocolate bar. The wrapper was designed by The Voice of the Ghetto (his blog, not recently updated, is pretty cool: this picture in particular is amazing).

Seeing ‘Voice of the Ghetto’ written on the side of the bar got me thinking about my own reckless youth, in the sandy-soiled, misty-morninged cranberry country in southern Massachusetts.

They called me “Voice of the Bog.” Doesn’t have quite the same ring, I suppose. Actually, thinking on it now, it sounds like the title of a Scooby Doo episode.

We’ve Got Your Chocolate Right Here

Some of you have perhaps heard of the nefarious hedge funder (are there non-nefarious hedge funders? That will have to wait for another blog post…) Anthony Ward, and his near-corner of the cacao market. There’s a good summation over at Business Insider, in their Clusterstock section (“Clusterstock”? Are they going for the obvious implication there? It seems that a Business Outsider would be more likely to look at this situation and think, “what a cluster*%#@,” but what do I know). Here you go. Naturally, as a chemically addicted chocolate fiend, you’re asking, “how does this affect me?”

Well, right after sleeping through my college course on John Milton (I woke up in time to hear that I could write a paper comparing Milton’s Comus to the Chronicles of Narnia, pretty much the only books I managed to read in college), I proceeded to sleep through my Introduction to Economics course, so you’re not going to get any trenchant economic analysis here. I will say, though, that in addition to stockpiling frozen french bread pizzas, automatic weaponry and cyanide pills in anticipation of the imminent global climato-economic apocalypse, we here at Chocolate Bar have also amassed a not-insignificant amount of chocolate, in easily-transported, easily-consumed chip form:

Scholars of turn of the 20th century American literature (I’m not one, as you’ll recall from the Milton episode, but I dated one for a while) are nodding their heads knowingly, as they reach for a dog-eared copy of Frank Norris’ The Pit, in which a greedy trader is undone in an attempt to corner the market on wheat, bringing destruction and despair upon himself and countless others in the process. Others are considering those wily Texans, the Hunt brothers, and their attempt at cornering the silver market in 1980; that, too, ended in failure.

All of which is to say that, if I were an investing man (which I’m not; I fancy myself more of a whiskey man), I’d be hedging my investments with some ‘short’ ‘puts’ on Mr. Anthony Ward, and putting some long ‘Monte Carlos’ on his imminent demise. After all, he hasn’t cornered our chocolate cache. So, in the meantime, if the corner bodega starts charging you an arm and a leg for that candy bar (not that we’re advocating bodega chocolate, but hey, sometimes you need a quick fix), fear not: we’ve got your chocolate right here.

Just don’t expect us to share any of our cyanide pills.
