Background: There’s nothing like a personalized mix of savory snacks to munch on while enjoying your favorite shows, movies, or sports. This homemade Bits and Bites recipe offers a delightful combination of textures and flavors. Plus, you have the flexibility to add or swap out ingredients based on your personal preferences.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 1 hour to 2 hours 30 minutes (depending on moisture)
Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 (225g) box Cheese Bits (alternatives: Cheese Nips or Goldfish crackers)
  • 1 (225g) box Mini Ritz Crackers
  • 6 cups Cheerios Cereal
  • 6 cups Shreddies Cereal
  • 6 cups Pretzels
  • 2 cups (or 1 pound) butter, melted
  • 1/3 cups Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 tbsp Tabasco sauce
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tsp chili powder

Optional Additions:

  • Goldfish crackers
  • Peanuts
  • Almonds
  • Chex
  • Corn chips
  • Crunchy Cheetos
  • Life cereal
  • M&Ms (post-baking)
  • Reeses Pieces (post-baking)
  • Beer nuts (post-baking)
  • Raisins (post-baking)

Instructions:

  1. Preparation: Begin by preheating your oven to 250°F (120°C).
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large roasting pan (typically used for turkey or large roast beef), combine the Cheese Bits, Mini Ritz, Cheerios, Shreddies, and pretzels.
  3. Prepare the Coating: In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter, Worcestershire Sauce, Tabasco sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and chili powder until well combined.
  4. Coat the Snacks: Pour the butter mixture over the snack mix in the roasting pan. Use a wooden spoon to stir and ensure that every piece is coated with the flavorful mixture. Make sure to dig into the corners and the bottom to bring up any snacks that might have been missed.
  5. Baking: Place the roasting pan in the oven. Over the course of approximately 2 hours, stir the mixture every 15 minutes, making sure to rotate the snacks from the bottom to the top. The goal is to ensure they’re evenly baked and all the moisture is gone. If after 2 hours some pieces are still moist, extend the baking time by another 15-30 minutes.
  6. Cooling and Storage: Once baked, allow the Bits and Bites to cool completely. Once cooled, transfer them to bags and seal tightly to maintain freshness and crispiness.

Serving Suggestion: This snack is perfect on its own, but for a touch of sweetness, consider adding M&Ms, Reeses Pieces, beer nuts, or raisins after baking.

Pro Tip: As with all recipes, feel free to get creative! Swap out or add any of the optional ingredients to make your personalized mix.
